By the people who tell the truth when lying would be easier.
That night, David sat on the porch between Margaret and Elena.
For the first time in his life, he had both women beside him.
His mother.
And his mother.
He laughed softly at the strange thought.
Elena smiled.
“What?””
David shook his head.
“Nothing.””
Margaret squeezed his hand.
“What are you thinking?””
David looked out at the quiet road.
“I was thinking that Dad was right.””
“About what?”” Elena asked.
David touched the small gold pendant resting in Margaret’s palm.
“Sometimes the smallest thing really can carry the biggest secret.””
Margaret smiled.
“And sometimes the person everyone underestimates…”
David finished the sentence.
“…is the person who already knows the truth.””
For the first time in twenty-seven years, there was nothing left to hide.
The necklace had done its job.
And the family secret that began with a frightened young mother, a gold pendant, and one impossible lie finally ended where it should have begun—
with the truth.
