Robert walked toward the window.

For a moment he seemed much older.

“When Elena became pregnant, Jonathan believed your father was trying to take her away from him.””

Margaret whispered,

“That wasn’t true.””

“No,” Robert said.

“It wasn’t.””

David looked from one to the other.

“Then why did he think that?””

“Because Jonathan believed Richard was helping Elena leave him.””

“And was he?””

“Yes.””

The answer came from Margaret.

“Your father wanted Elena and the baby somewhere safe.””

David swallowed.

“So my father knew.””

“He knew everything,” Margaret said.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because Elena asked him not to.””

David looked confused.

“Why would she give me up if she wanted me safe?””

Margaret looked down.

“Because she was running.””

“From Jonathan?””

“Yes.””

Thomas added,

“And from someone else.””

David looked at him.

“Who?””

Thomas turned toward Robert.

Robert shook his head.

“Don’t.””

Thomas’s voice remained calm.

“She deserves the truth.””

Robert stared at him.

“You have no right.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“And you had no right to hide it.””

David looked between them.

“What are you both talking about?””

Margaret answered.

“Jonathan wasn’t alone.””

David’s stomach tightened.

“Who helped him?””

Margaret whispered a name.

“Evelyn.””

David slowly turned.

Evelyn was standing near the wall.

She looked devastated.

“I knew Jonathan,” she said.

“You helped him?””

“No.””

“Then why are you involved?””

She wiped her cheek.

“Because I met him through Robert.””

David looked at Robert.

“You brought Evelyn into this?””

Robert didn’t answer.

David’s anger sharpened.

“Why?””

“Because she was useful.””

Evelyn flinched.

The admission seemed to hurt her more than anything else.

David looked at her.

“Useful for what?””

She lowered her head.

“To get close to your family.””

David felt sick.

“So you were sent into my life.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not at first.””

“What does that mean?””

“When I met you, I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you leave?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because by then I loved you.””

David laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like everything you’ve ever told me was a lie.””

“Not everything.””

She took a step toward him.

“Our marriage wasn’t fake.””

“Then tell me one thing that was real.””

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

“You.””

David’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

“I loved you.””

“You stole from my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You helped people who wanted control of my family.””

“Yes.””

“Then what exactly was real?””

Tears streamed down her face.

“You were.””

David looked away.

He couldn’t answer.

Thomas stepped closer to the laptop.

“There is another recording.””

David turned.

“What?””

Thomas pointed at the screen.

The Elena file remained open.

A folder of hidden recordings appeared underneath it.

Three files.

One dated twenty-seven years ago.

One dated twenty-six years ago.

One dated twelve years ago.

David’s breath caught.

“Twelve years ago?””

Thomas nodded.

“The year your father died.””

Robert moved suddenly.

“No.””

David stepped in front of him.

“Why not?””

Robert stared at the screen.

“Because that recording should not exist.””

David’s voice was cold.

“Then we definitely need to hear it.””

He clicked the twelve-year-old file.

The screen showed a dark parking lot.

Rain hit the windshield of a parked car.

A woman sat inside.

David leaned toward the screen.

He didn’t recognize her.

Then she turned her face toward the camera.

Margaret cried out.

“Elena.””

David froze.

The woman on the screen looked older than she would have been in his childhood photographs.

But the eyes were the same as Margaret’s.

The same shape.

The same sadness.

Elena spoke.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed to come back.””

David’s chest tightened.

She continued.

“I tried.””

Her voice trembled.

“I tried for years.””

David whispered,

“Mom…”

The woman on the screen looked directly at the camera.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, David.””

He stopped breathing.

She knew his name.

“I know Richard raised you. I know Margaret loved you. And I know they told you I was gone.””

Elena looked down.

“But I wasn’t dead.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

David turned toward her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“I received one letter.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

David looked back at the screen.

Elena continued.

“Someone told me that if I returned, they would hurt my son.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“So I stayed away.””

David’s hand trembled.

“Who?””

The woman on the screen looked toward the passenger seat.

For a moment, someone else’s reflection appeared in the glass.

Then Elena whispered:

“Robert knows.””

The room exploded.

Robert stumbled backward.

“No.””

Elena continued.

“He knew where I was.””

David turned.

“You knew she was alive.””

Robert shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

“You’re lying.””

“I swear to God, I didn’t.””

The recording continued.

“He told me Richard would never forgive me for leaving.””

Robert’s face went pale.

“That isn’t what happened.””

Elena looked toward the camera again.

“I believed him.””

Margaret whispered,

“You sent her away.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“I was trying to save her.””

David stared at him.

“From what?””

Robert opened his eyes.

His voice broke.

“From Jonathan.””

“And did you?””

Robert said nothing.

The answer was obvious.

The video continued.

Elena took a breath.

“If David ever sees this, I need him to know that I didn’t abandon him.””

David’s eyes burned.

“I wanted to come home.””

She touched the screen with trembling fingers.

“I wanted to tell him I was his mother.””

The video suddenly distorted.

The sound broke into static.

Then Elena’s face disappeared.

A new image appeared.

An envelope.

On the front was handwritten:

*FOR DAVID — WHEN HE IS READY.*

Thomas stared at it.

“This is the message.””

David looked at him.

“What message?””

“The one hidden inside the necklace.””

He opened the original pendant again and examined the tiny compartment.

“There should be a second storage device.””

David’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Thomas turned the pendant over.

A nearly invisible seam ran through the gold.
