“He found the farmhouse.””
Thomas asked quietly,
“And then?””
Robert hesitated.
“Your father arrived.””
David turned.
“My father?””
“He followed me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Jonathan would come.””
Margaret whispered:
“Richard told me to take you and leave through the back.””
“Where did you go?””
“To the old church.””
“And Dad?””
“He stayed.””
David’s breath caught.
“What happened to him?””
“He confronted Jonathan.””
Robert’s voice cracked.
“There was shouting.””
“Then?””
“A gunshot.””
Margaret covered her face.
David froze.
“You heard a gunshot?””
“Yes.””
“Was Dad shot?””
“No.””
Robert looked at him.
“Richard wasn’t.””
David exhaled.
“Then who?””
Robert didn’t answer.
Margaret did.
“No one was killed that night.””
David stared at her.
“Then why did everyone act like it was a death?””
Margaret looked toward the laptop.
“Because something worse happened.””
David frowned.
“What?””
“Your father found Elena.””
Robert’s face went pale.
“What?””
Margaret nodded.
“After the gunshot, Richard discovered Elena had returned.””
David couldn’t speak.
“She had been hiding near the farmhouse.””
“Why?””
“She had changed her mind.””
Margaret’s voice broke.
“She wanted to take you and run.””
David felt tears forming.
“What happened?””
“Jonathan saw her.””
Robert whispered,
“He saw both of them.””
“Then what?””
“Richard tried to get Elena away.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Jonathan chased them.””
David looked between them.
“And me?””
“You were with me.””
“Where?””
“Inside the church.””
“Then how did Elena disappear?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
David waited.
Finally she whispered:
“Because Jonathan didn’t take her.””
David stared.
“Who did?””
Margaret looked at Robert.
Robert’s face went gray.
“Robert did.””
David turned slowly.
“You took my mother?””
Robert shook his head.
“I saved her.””
“You took her.””
“I got her away from Jonathan.””
“Where?””
Robert looked down.
“I put her in a car.””
“And?””
“I told her she could never come back.””
David’s voice shook.
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan would never stop.””
“And you believed disappearing was the only way?””
“Yes.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“No.””
Robert looked at her.
“You didn’t just tell her to disappear.””
Margaret’s voice broke.
“You told her David would be killed if she returned.””
David stared.
“That isn’t true.””
Robert looked at him.
“I thought it would keep her away long enough for everyone to survive.””
“You lied to her.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe she abandoned me.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
David looked like he had been punched.
“Why?””
Robert opened his eyes.
“Because Jonathan wasn’t the only person looking for you.””
The room went silent.
David’s voice dropped.
“Who else?””
Robert looked toward Evelyn.
She began shaking her head.
“No.””
David stared at her.
“Who?””
Robert said:
“Someone inside your father’s company.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Robert.””
Robert looked at him.
“It’s time.””
“No.””
“It’s gone too far.””
Robert’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
Thomas reached into the leather folder and removed one final document.
“I found this years ago.””
Robert stared at it.
David took it.
The document was old.
A hospital record.
His birth certificate.
But there was something strange.
A second page had been attached.
A handwritten note.
David read it silently.
Then aloud.
“*Birth mother listed as Elena Vale. Father unknown.*”
His hands began to shake.
“Vale.””
He looked at Robert.
“Jonathan Vale.””
Robert said nothing.
David’s face drained of color.
“You knew who my father was.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Margaret.
“You knew too.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Your biological father was Jonathan.””
David stepped backward.
The world seemed to tilt.
His entire life had just changed again.
But before anyone could speak, Evelyn suddenly grabbed the laptop.
She looked at David.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she turned and ran toward the door.
David shouted her name.
She didn’t stop.
And as she disappeared into the darkness outside, the phone in David’s hand vibrated.
A new message had arrived.
No number.
No name.
Just one sentence.
*YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU WHAT HAPPENED TO JONATHAN.*
A second message followed.
*BUT SHE WILL.*
Then, beneath it, an address appeared.
The exact farmhouse where David had been hidden as a baby.
David stared at the address on his phone.
The farmhouse.
The same place where, twenty-seven years earlier, his entire life had supposedly changed.
The same place where his biological mother had disappeared.
The same place where his father had confronted a man with a gun.
And now someone was telling him to go back.
Margaret saw the screen.
Her face drained of color.
“No.””
David looked at her.
“You know that address.””
“Yes.””
“Then we’re going.””
“No.””
Her voice was firmer this time.
“You cannot go there.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that message knows things they shouldn’t.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“She’s right.””
David looked at him.
“You knew the address too.””
“I knew the farmhouse existed.””
“You didn’t tell me.””
“I didn’t think you were ready.””
David laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I’m ready for.””
He grabbed his coat.
“This ends tonight.””
Margaret stood.
“David, please.””
He stopped.
She looked terrified.
Not of him.
Of the farmhouse.
“What happened there after I left?”” he asked.
Margaret didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her voice shook.
“Your father went back.””
“When?””
“Three days later.””
“Why?””
“To find Elena.””
David’s heart tightened.
“Did he?””
“He found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Margaret looked at Thomas.
Thomas quietly opened the leather folder again.
“The farmhouse was abandoned.””
David frowned.
“Abandoned?””
“Completely.””
“But someone had been there.””
“Yes.””
“There were signs of a struggle.””
David swallowed.
“Blood?””
Thomas nodded.
“A small amount.””
David’s stomach turned.
“Whose?””
“We never determined that.””
Robert suddenly spoke from across the room.
“Mine.””
Everyone turned.
Robert stood near the window.
His face looked older than ever.
David stared.
“You were injured?””
Robert nodded.
“During the confrontation.””
“What happened?””
Robert rubbed his shoulder.
“Jonathan shot me.””
David’s eyes widened.
“And you survived.””
“Yes.””
“Then what happened to Jonathan?””
Robert looked at Margaret.
“She knows.””
David turned toward his mother.
“Mom.””
Margaret’s face crumpled.
“I thought he was dead.””
David went still.
“You thought?””
“We found his car near the river.””
