Evelyn nodded on the screen.
“He said I had one chance.””
David stared.
“One chance for what?””
“To tell you the truth.””
The recording paused.
Then Evelyn said something that made everyone at the table go silent.
“I didn’t.””
David looked at his wife.
“What did you do instead?””
Present-day Evelyn whispered, “David…”
The recording answered.
“I lied.””
The younger Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I told Richard that if he exposed me, I would tell David that he was trying to take his inheritance away.””
David’s eyes widened.
“You threatened my father?””
“Yes.””
“I threatened the only thing I knew he couldn’t tolerate.””
The video showed her looking down.
“His son’s trust.””
Margaret slowly covered her mouth.
David shook his head.
“You destroyed their relationship.””
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“I didn’t know how far it would go.””
“You knew enough.””
“I was scared.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
“Yes.””
It was the first honest answer she had given all night.
The room went completely silent.
David sat down.
He looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Like the last fifteen years had collapsed on top of him in a single evening.
“Why did Dad never tell me?””
Margaret sat beside him.
“Because he thought you would blame yourself.””
“For what?””
“For choosing Evelyn.””
David looked at his mother.
Margaret continued softly.
“He thought if he told you everything, you would believe that marrying her had ruined the family.””
David stared at the floor.
“I would have listened.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your father asked me not to.””
David looked up sharply.
“Why?””
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he was afraid of what she would do next.””
David looked toward Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn said nothing.
Thomas opened another section of the folder.
“There were threats.””
David turned.
“Against Mom?””
“Against your father first.””
Thomas placed down copies of handwritten notes.
David picked up one.
The handwriting wasn’t familiar.
But the words were.
*You will regret forcing my hand.*
Another:
*If David learns everything, you lose him forever.*
Another:
*Give me control, or I will make sure no one believes you.*
David looked up.
“Who wrote these?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
He simply looked at Evelyn.
She stared at the floor.
David slowly placed the notes down.
“Were these yours?””
Evelyn’s voice was barely audible.
“Some of them.””
The room reacted immediately.
A cousin gasped.
Someone muttered, “Oh my God.””
David didn’t move.
He just stared at her.
“All these years…”
Evelyn began crying.
“I was desperate.””
“You had everything.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I had nothing that was mine.””
David shook his head.
“You had me.””
She looked away.
The video continued playing.
“I thought Richard would eventually give up.””
The younger Evelyn leaned toward the camera.
“But he didn’t.””
Her expression changed.
“He found something.””
Thomas suddenly stood.
David looked at him.
“What?””
Thomas’s eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“That’s the part your father told me never to discuss.””
“What did he find?””
Evelyn looked terrified.
The recording continued.
“Richard found evidence that someone had been using my name to move money.””
David frowned.
“Someone else?””
Evelyn’s younger face was pale.
“I didn’t do that part.””
Thomas whispered, “That’s why this got worse.””
David looked at him.
“What are you talking about?””
The recording continued.
“Someone had been moving much larger amounts than I ever touched.””
Evelyn stared directly into the camera.
“And they were using my identity.””
David’s eyes widened.
“So someone framed her?””
Thomas shook his head.
“That’s what we believed.””
“We?””
“Your father and I.””
David looked back at Evelyn.
She was crying now.
“You knew someone was using your name?””
“Yes.””
“And you still kept stealing.””
“I stopped.””
“After you got caught.””
“I stopped because I was scared.””
The recording suddenly distorted.
The image became grainy.
Then Evelyn’s younger voice dropped to a whisper.
“Richard told me he knew who was really behind the missing money.””
David leaned closer.
“Who?””
The screen flickered.
The younger Evelyn looked toward the door in the recording, as if she had heard something.
Then she whispered:
“He said it was someone inside our family.””
The video went black.
Everyone stared at the screen.
David stood.
“That’s it?””
Thomas looked at the laptop.
“No.””
A progress bar remained.
The file had not ended.
Thirty seconds remained.
Suddenly, the screen came back.
But the camera angle was different.
The room was empty.
Then a shadow passed in front of the doorway.
A man’s voice spoke off-camera.
“You should have destroyed this.””
Evelyn’s younger voice answered.
“I tried.””
David froze.
He knew that man’s voice.
His face drained of color.
Because it belonged to someone who had been sitting at their dinner table all night.
The voice coming from the laptop filled the room.
A voice that should not have been there.
A voice that made David stop breathing.
Because he knew it.
Everyone did.
The recording continued.
The camera showed a dark room. The angle was different from before, as if someone had moved the device after Evelyn’s confession.
A shadow crossed the doorway.
Then the man spoke again.
“You should have destroyed this.””
Evelyn’s younger voice answered.
“I tried.””
David slowly turned his head.
Nobody moved.
Nobody needed to ask.
They all knew.
The voice belonged to someone in the room.
Someone who had been listening.
Someone who had been standing beside them.
David looked toward Thomas.
But Thomas looked just as shocked.
Then his eyes moved past him.
Toward the dining room.
Toward one of the guests.
A man sitting quietly at the end of the table.
David’s uncle.
Robert.
The man who had spent the entire evening saying almost nothing.
The man who had arrived twenty minutes late.
The man who had told everyone he was tired from driving.
Robert looked at the laptop.
Then at David.
And for the first time all night, he looked afraid.
“Uncle Robert?””
The name came out like a question.
Robert slowly stood.
Nobody spoke.
His chair scraped against the floor.
