“I think this has gone far enough.””
David stared at him.
“Far enough?””
Robert looked around.
“At a family dinner?””
David laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You mean the dinner where my mother was pushed to the floor?””
Robert’s expression changed.
“I don’t know what you think happened.””
David pointed at the laptop.
“I know exactly what I heard.””
Robert looked at Evelyn.
For a brief second, something passed between them.
A silent conversation.
And David saw it.
“You knew.””
Robert looked back.
“Knew what?””
“You knew about the necklace.””
Silence.
Margaret slowly stood with David’s help.
“Robert.””
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the disappointment in it.
“You knew.””
Robert looked at her.
“Margaret, this is complicated.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
Her hand rested over the pendant.
“It was never complicated.””
Robert sighed.
“You always were too trusting.””
David stepped forward.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Robert looked at him.
“You have no idea what your father left behind.””
“Then explain.””
Robert said nothing.
“Explain why your voice is on that recording.””
The room waited.
Finally, Robert looked at the laptop.
“I was trying to stop something.””
David stared.
“By threatening Evelyn?””
“No.””
“By hiding evidence?””
“No.””
“By letting my father die believing everyone betrayed him?””
Robert’s face tightened.
The words hit him.
“I didn’t betray Richard.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You did.””
Robert looked away.
For a moment, David saw something unexpected.
Regret.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Regret.
The video continued playing.
Everyone turned back.
The younger Evelyn was still on screen.
“Robert, please.””
Her voice sounded desperate.
The shadow moved closer.
“You don’t understand what you’ve done.””
The man spoke again.
“I told you to stop asking questions.””
Evelyn answered:
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
The shadow stepped into view.
The image was blurry.
But the voice was clear.
“I warned you.””
David stared at Robert.
“You.””
Robert closed his eyes.
The video continued.
Evelyn whispered:
“What happens now?””
The man answered:
“Now we make sure Margaret gives up control.””
David’s stomach dropped.
Margaret grabbed the arm of the chair.
The room went silent.
Robert finally spoke.
“I never wanted it to happen like this.””
David turned toward him.
“You wanted her money.””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Robert looked at Margaret.
“Protection.””
Nobody believed him.
Not even him.
Thomas stepped forward.
“You told Richard you were helping him.””
Robert looked at him.
“I was.””
“You weren’t.””
“I was trying to keep the family together.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You were trying to keep control.””
Robert’s face hardened.
“You don’t know what happened between brothers.””
“No.””
Thomas looked at him.
“But I know what Richard discovered.””
David looked between them.
“Someone explain this.””
Margaret sat down slowly.
“Your father and Robert built the company together.””
David nodded.
“I know.””
“No,” she said.
“You know the story they told you.””
David looked confused.
“What story?””
“The story where Robert left because he wanted a quieter life.””
Robert looked at the floor.
David’s eyes narrowed.
“That wasn’t true?””
Margaret shook her head.
“Robert left because your father discovered money missing.””
Robert immediately spoke.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
Margaret looked at him.
“I didn’t say you did.””
The distinction mattered.
David noticed.
“So what happened?””
Thomas answered.
“Your father discovered financial records showing someone had been moving money through different accounts.””
“And he blamed Robert?””
“No.””
Thomas looked at Robert.
“He suspected someone was using Robert.””
Robert looked up.
“What?””
David stared.
“You mean someone framed him?””
Thomas nodded.
“That was the first possibility.””
“And the second?””
Thomas hesitated.
“That Robert was involved.””
The room became silent.
Robert looked wounded.
“Richard never trusted me.””
Margaret’s expression softened slightly.
“He trusted you too much.””
Robert looked at her.
“That’s not fair.””
“No.””
Margaret shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
Her voice became stronger.
“Because if he had trusted you less, maybe he would still be alive.””
David looked at his mother.
“What does Dad’s death have to do with this?””
Nobody answered.
That frightened him more.
“Mom.””
Margaret looked down.
“Your father’s death certificate says heart failure.””
David nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“But he was under incredible stress before he died.””
“Because of the money?””
“Because of what he discovered.””
David’s face changed.
“You think someone caused it?””
Margaret looked at Thomas.
Then at Robert.
“We never had proof.””
Robert immediately said:
“Because there was no proof.””
David looked at him.
“Why are you so desperate to say that?””
Robert didn’t answer.
The laptop suddenly beeped.
Everyone turned.
A new notification appeared.
The video file had finished.
But another file had appeared.
A document.
The title:
*RICHARD’S FINAL STATEMENT.*
Thomas moved closer.
“I didn’t know that was there.””
David looked at the screen.
“Open it.””
Thomas clicked.
A scanned letter appeared.
The handwriting was his father’s.
David recognized it immediately.
His eyes filled.
“Dad wrote this?””
Margaret nodded.
“He wanted you to have it when you were ready.””
David began reading.
The first line appeared:
*My son, if you are reading this, then the people I feared have already found the necklace.*
David stopped.
His hand covered his mouth.
The letter continued.
*I need you to understand something. The necklace was never about money. It was never about inheritance. It was about proof.*
Thomas scrolled down.
More words appeared.
*The person who betrayed this family is not working alone.*
David looked up.
The room suddenly felt colder.
The letter continued.
*Evelyn was involved. But she was not the person who started this.*
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
She looked down.
David whispered:
“She wasn’t?””
Thomas continued reading.
*The person who convinced Evelyn to do what she did is someone closer than she realizes.*
David’s eyes moved slowly.
The letter showed one final sentence.
A sentence that made Robert take a step backward.
*David, trust your mother. Trust Thomas. But do not trust the person who calls himself your family.*
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The letter wasn’t talking about Evelyn.
It wasn’t talking about Thomas.
