The name of the file appeared.

*THE ORIGINAL CONFESSION.*

David stared.

Thomas leaned closer.

Margaret covered her mouth.

And Evelyn took one step backward.

Because she knew exactly what was inside.

The file opened.

The first frame appeared.

And the person on the screen was not David’s father.

It was Evelyn.

For three seconds, nobody recognized the woman on the screen.

Then Evelyn whispered her own name.

The recording showed her sitting at a desk in a small room, years younger, her hair longer, her face thinner. She looked exhausted.

But it was unmistakably her.

David stared at the laptop.

“No.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“David…”

He held up a hand.

“Don’t.””

The room seemed to contract around them.

On the screen, the younger Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I don’t know who will eventually see this. I don’t know whether it will be David, Margaret, Thomas, or someone neither of them knows.””

David’s breathing became shallow.

The recording continued.

“But if you’re watching this, then I failed.””

Margaret looked at Thomas.

“You knew?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not this.””

Evelyn moved toward the laptop.

“Turn it off.””

David stepped in front of it.

“No.””

“David, please.””

“You’ve been telling me my entire marriage that my mother was paranoid.””

“I never said—”

“You said she was confused.””

Evelyn stopped.

“You said my father became obsessed with money.””

She stopped again.

“You told me he didn’t trust anyone because he was sick.””

David’s voice broke.

“And now I’m watching you confess.””

“I wasn’t confessing.””

He looked at the screen.

“Then why did you record it?””

Evelyn had no answer.

The younger Evelyn on the video continued.

“I need to explain what happened before anyone decides what I am.””

David laughed bitterly.

“Before anyone decides what you are?””

He stared at his wife.

“You don’t get to control that anymore.””

Evelyn looked toward the others.

“Please leave.””

One of the relatives slowly stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“I’m sorry, Evelyn, but I think we’re all staying.””

Another guest nodded.

“We need to hear this.””

Evelyn looked trapped.

The recording continued.

“I met David when everything in his family already belonged to Margaret.””

Evelyn’s younger voice sounded almost bitter.

“The house. The accounts. The investments. The business.””

David frowned.

“The business?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Your father’s company.””

David stared at him.

“I thought Dad owned it.””

“He did.””

The video continued.

“But he made one mistake,” Evelyn said on the screen.

“He trusted his son.””

David’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret’s hands trembled.

“Your father believed you would eventually take over the company.””

David nodded slowly.

“That was always the plan.””

“It changed,” Thomas said.

“Why?””

Evelyn answered from the recording.

“Because David didn’t want it.””

David looked at the screen.

The younger Evelyn folded her hands on the desk.

“David wanted a normal life. He wanted to travel. He wanted to work with people, not numbers. He didn’t care about the company.””

Her mouth tightened.

“And I thought that was foolish.””

The present-day Evelyn looked down.

David noticed.

“You believed I was wasting my inheritance.””

“No,” she whispered.

The recording answered for her.

“I knew David would eventually give most of it away.””

David turned toward her.

“To my mother?””

“To charity,” Evelyn said quietly.

The room fell silent.

The younger Evelyn continued.

“David didn’t understand what his father’s money could do. He wanted to simplify everything. Sell properties.

Close accounts. Divide the assets.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I couldn’t let that happen.””

David’s eyes narrowed.

“So you married me for the money?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.””

The screen continued.

“At first, I married him because I loved him.””

David’s expression softened for half a second.

Then the next words came.

“But love changed when I realized what I could lose.””

His face hardened again.

Thomas quietly closed his eyes.

Margaret whispered, “There it is.””

The recording continued.

“I started by convincing David that his mother needed help.””

The younger Evelyn’s voice became more deliberate.

“Margaret was aging. She wasn’t as quick as she used to be. I suggested that I help organize the household finances.””

David shook his head.

“I trusted you.””

Evelyn whispered, “I know.””

“You used that.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Us?””

The younger Evelyn continued.

“I transferred small amounts first.””

David’s face went pale.

“How much?””

The recording didn’t answer immediately.

Then Evelyn said:

“Nothing significant.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That was a lie.””

He pulled another document from the folder.

“These were the first transfers.””

David looked at the page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The amounts were small.

Individually.

But there were dozens of them.

He slowly added them in his head.

“That’s almost eighty thousand dollars.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Evelyn looked at David.

“I put it back.””

“Not all of it.””

“I intended to.””

“You intended to?””

Her voice became defensive.

“I was building something.””

“For yourself.””

“For our future.””

“You were stealing from my mother.””

“I was securing what I believed our family would need.””

David stared at her as if she had become someone else.

“Listen to yourself.””

The recording continued.

“I thought Margaret would eventually sign everything over.””

The younger Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.

“She trusted me.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“I was stupid.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“You were kind,” he corrected.

Margaret looked at him.

Thomas continued.

“She used that against you.””

On the screen, Evelyn took a deep breath.

“But Margaret started asking questions.””

The room became still.

“She noticed the bank statements.””

David looked at his mother.

“And Dad found out.””

“Yes,” Thomas said.

Evelyn on the recording nodded.

“Richard confronted me.””

David froze.

His father’s name.

Hearing it from Evelyn’s mouth made the past feel painfully close.

“He told me he knew what I had done.””

The younger Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I begged him not to tell David.””

Margaret whispered, “He refused.””
