Thomas interrupted quietly.
“But there was no body.””
David looked at him.
“So Jonathan could still be alive.””
“Yes.””
A terrible possibility settled over the room.
The message.
The address.
Evelyn running.
Someone watching them.
Someone who knew the truth.
David looked at the front door.
“We’re going.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I am coming with you.””
“No.””
“I have kept this secret for twenty-seven years.””
Her voice steadied.
“I won’t let you face it alone.””
Thomas nodded.
“I’ll drive.””
Robert suddenly stepped forward.
“I’m coming too.””
David looked at him.
“No.””
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“If Jonathan is alive, he’s dangerous.””
“And so are you.””
Robert accepted the words without protest.
Finally, he nodded.
“I deserve that.””
David looked at Evelyn’s empty chair.
“What about her?””
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret said quietly,
“She’ll come back.””
David looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because she knows where the truth ends.””
The drive to the farmhouse took nearly two hours.
Nobody spoke much.
Rain streaked the windshield.
David sat in the passenger seat beside Thomas.
Margaret sat behind him.
Robert sat beside her.
At one point, David looked in the rearview mirror.
His uncle’s face was unreadable.
“You’re still hiding something,” David said.
Robert didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“What?””
“I’ll tell you when we arrive.””
David turned.
“Why wait?””
“Because I need you to see it.””
Thomas looked at Robert.
“You should have told him years ago.””
“I know.””
The road narrowed as they approached the countryside.
The farmhouse appeared at the end of a long dirt lane.
It looked abandoned.
The roof sagged slightly.
Tall grass covered the yard.
One shutter hung crookedly from a window.
David stared.
“This is where I was?””
“Yes,” Margaret said.
He got out.
The air smelled of wet earth and pine.
Every step toward the house made his chest tighten.
The front door was unlocked.
Thomas pushed it open.
A cold draft moved through the hallway.
David stepped inside.
Dust covered the floor.
The wallpaper had peeled away in places.
But beneath the decay, something looked familiar.
A staircase.
A fireplace.
A narrow hallway.
Memories he didn’t actually remember seemed to pull at him.
Margaret entered behind him.
“This was the room where we stayed.””
She pointed toward a small bedroom.
David walked inside.
There was an old wooden crib in the corner.
He touched it.
His fingers trembled.
“This was mine?””
Margaret nodded.
“You slept here.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he imagined a baby crying.
A woman whispering.
A man shouting.
Then he opened his eyes.
On the wall above the crib was a faded pencil mark.
Several lines.
Dates.
Measurements.
Someone had marked a child’s growth.
David stared.
“Mom.””
Margaret approached.
She touched one of the marks.
“Elena did that.””
David looked at her.
“She stayed here with me?””
“For two nights.””
“And then?””
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“She left before dawn.””
“Why?””
“Because she heard someone outside.””
David looked toward the window.
“Jonathan?””
“We thought so.””
Thomas called from the hallway.
“There’s something here.””
They followed him into the kitchen.
An old floorboard had been lifted.
Beneath it was a metal box.
Thomas crouched.
“This wasn’t here when we searched the place.””
Robert went pale.
“How would you know?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because you were with me.””
Robert stared at the box.
“I forgot.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“You chose not to remember.””
David opened the box.
Inside were letters.
Photographs.
A key.
And an old cassette recorder.
He picked up the first letter.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
*To Margaret.*
He opened it.
If you’re reading this, then I didn’t make it back.
David’s eyes moved quickly.
I need you to protect David no matter what they tell you.
He looked up.
“Who are they?””
Margaret whispered,
“Keep reading.””
He did.
Jonathan is not the only person I fear.
Another line.
Robert knows more than he admits.
David looked at Robert.
Robert closed his eyes.
“Go on.””
The letter continued.
There is another person inside the family who has been feeding him information.
David’s pulse raced.
He turned the page.
But the next section had been torn away.
“That’s it?””
“There was more,” Margaret said.
“How do you know?””
“Because Elena showed me the rest.””
David stared.
“What did it say?””
Margaret couldn’t answer.
Thomas picked up the cassette recorder.
“There may be another copy.””
He examined it.
A tape was already inside.
David pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena’s voice.
“If this recording is being played, then I have run out of places to hide.””
David froze.
Her voice was closer now.
Almost like she was in the room with them.
“I need to tell David the truth.””
Margaret began crying.
Elena continued.
“Your father is Jonathan Vale.””
David shut his eyes.
He knew.
But hearing it from her made it real.
“I didn’t tell Richard at first.””
A pause.
“I was afraid he would hate me.””
David’s eyes opened.
“He didn’t.””
Elena’s voice broke.
“Richard loved you before he knew anything about blood.””
A quiet breath.
“He became your father because he chose to.””
David wiped his eyes.
Then Elena said something that made him stop.
“But Jonathan did not disappear because of the money.””
Robert whispered,
“No.””
David turned.
The recording continued.
“He disappeared because of what he did to me.””
The room went silent.
Elena continued.
“Jonathan was obsessed with having a son he could control.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“When he learned David was mine, he believed the child belonged to him.””
David’s stomach twisted.
“He wanted to take David.””
Elena’s voice became softer.
“Richard stopped him.””
A pause.
“And that is why Richard died afraid.””
David stared at the recorder.
“What happened to Dad?””
Elena continued.
“Richard found evidence that Jonathan was connected to someone else.””
Thomas leaned closer.
“Who?””
The tape crackled.
Then Elena said a name.
Not Robert.
Not Evelyn.
A name none of them expected.
“*Margaret.*”
David froze.
He turned slowly.
