Alan Chen walked in carrying two coffees and a folder thick with legal documents. “Gentlemen, the injunction to stop Lily’s transfer was denied. The judge on the case used to work at Maddox Systems’ legal department.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “So, he bought the law now, too.”
Alan nodded grimly. “For now, but we can appeal.”
Across the street in the hospital’s luxury wing, Cole stood in front of a mirror, adjusting his tie. His reflection looked flawless, but his eyes carried the sleepless shine of paranoia. Sloan Archer, his PR director and secret mistress, sat on the couch behind him, legs crossed, scrolling through social media.
“It’s working,” she said. “You look like the caring husband who held his wife through hysteria.”
Cole smiled faintly. “Public memory is short. In a week, no one will even remember her version.”
“But what about the nurse?” Sloan asked. “The one who leaked that partial clip?”
He met her eyes in the mirror. “Handled. She’s suspended. I had hospital security flag her as emotionally unstable.”
Sloan hesitated. “And the brothers?”
Cole’s tone turned colder. “They’ll burn their own credibility chasing conspiracy. I’ve already instructed the board to review their family trust investments. Let’s see how ethical they look when I’m done.” He picked up his Rolex from the dresser, slid it on, and turned to Sloan. “Book the Plaza for lunch. Tell the press we’re donating another million to Maternal Wellness.”
Back in the Hail brothers’ suite, Marcus’ monitor blinked. “Wait, someone’s altering Lily’s medical records in real time.” He projected the data onto the wall. “See this? They’re adding psychiatric codes under her name: delusional episode, self-harm risk.”
Bennett slammed his fist into his palm. “He’s rewriting her into a mental patient.”
Ethan took a deep breath, then turned to Alan. “File an emergency appeal. If they move her to another facility, we’ll lose jurisdiction.”
Alan nodded and left immediately.
For the first time, Ethan sat down, hands steepled in front of his face. “He’s playing a long game,” he said quietly. “He’s not trying to just silence her. He’s erasing her.”
Marcus’ phone buzzed with a new message from Jordan Pike: He knows about the clip. IT is scrubbing everything. I’m sorry.
The three brothers looked at each other. Marcus whispered, “If he wipes that footage, it’s over.”
“Then we don’t let him,” Ethan said. “We take it higher.” He grabbed his phone and called a contact he hadn’t spoken to in years—a senior producer at NBC investigations. “I’ve got something for you,” he said. “A story about a CEO who cut off his wife’s oxygen during labor. You’ll want to hear this.”
The line went silent for a beat. Then the producer’s voice came low and cautious: “Send proof, but be careful.”
