“How would we know he’s the right one?”
I thought about Colin.
About everything I’d believed.
About the warning signs I’d overlooked because I wanted our story to have a beautiful ending.
Then I looked at June.
“He would never make you question whether you belonged.”
June smiled.
“Okay.”
She took my hand and guided me toward the kitchen.
We had dinner to prepare.
Homework to complete.
A Saturday movie to pick.
Another ordinary evening waiting for us.
And I appreciated every moment.
For years, I’d believed marriage would give June the family she deserved.
I’d misunderstood something important.
She already had a mother who adored her, a father who remained involved in her life, and a home where she was always welcome.
What she nearly gained was a stepfather who made her question whether she deserved her place.
I hadn’t given my daughter the wedding we’d spent months planning.
But I’d honored the promise I’d made when she was small.
That there would always be room for her beside me.
And that in our family, nobody would ever need to make themselves smaller to deserve love.
