Marlowe Residential Holdings also owned two rental properties, a waterfront parcel, and several redevelopment options.
Adrian looked toward his mother.
“You said the company only held this house.”
Vivian did not answer.
I stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I knew what Margaret told me.”
Richard whispered, “Jesus.”
Adrian turned on Vivian.
“You told me if Elena added me as manager, I’d have security.”
“I was trying to help you.”
“You told me the company had no money.”
“That wasn’t relevant.”
“Eight million dollars isn’t relevant?”
There it was.
Greed stripping away loyalty.
Adrian had spent the morning insisting this was about dignity.
Now he had learned there was hidden money and immediately changed.
I watched him carefully.
“Did you know about the transfer request?”
“No.”
I believed him.
That did not absolve him.
It only meant someone more experienced had used him.
Marcus looked at Vivian.
“Who initiated it?”
She crossed her arms.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel said, “The beneficiary account belongs to Altura Consulting.”
Patricia inhaled sharply.
Everyone looked at her.
“What?” I asked.
She shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“Patricia.”
She looked toward Vivian.
Vivian’s face was blank.
Too blank.
Patricia whispered, “Altura was Margaret’s company.”
Marcus swore softly.
“But it dissolved years ago.”
“Apparently not.”
Daniel checked again.
“The transfer is pending authorization.”
“Whose?”
“Mine?” Adrian said.
Daniel looked at him almost pityingly.
“No.”
He turned toward me.
“Yours.”
I frowned.
“I didn’t authorize it.”
“It requires biometric confirmation from the primary trust beneficiary.”
“That’s me.”
“Yes.”
“So it can’t go through.”
“Correct.”
I exhaled.
Then he added, “Unless someone changed the beneficiary.”
Marcus looked up.
“Did they?”
Daniel’s silence answered first.
“What name?” I asked.
He turned the screen.
Beneficiary amendment submitted.
Elena Grace Marlowe removed.
Sophie Grace Cole added.
I stared.
My daughter.
Three days old.
“What does that accomplish?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“If Sophie becomes beneficiary, a legal guardian controls assets on her behalf.”
Everyone looked at Adrian.
His face lost color.
I understood.
The custody petition.
The forged deed.
The attack on my mental stability.
They were not separate.
They were one plan.
If Adrian obtained emergency custody, and Sophie became beneficiary of the LLC, he could claim authority over millions in assets.
He stared at his mother.
“You said this was about the house.”
Vivian spoke quietly.
“It was about protecting your future.”
“You used Sophie’s name?”
“For you.”
“No.”
He backed away from her.
“You told me Gregory needed the custody petition so Elena couldn’t throw me out.”
“That was true.”
“You didn’t tell me about eight million dollars.”
“You would have ruined it.”
His face changed.
He finally saw her.
Not as his mother.
As his accomplice.
“I would have ruined it?”
“You are emotional.”
The irony nearly made me laugh.
Vivian continued.
“You love Elena.”
Adrian looked at me.
“I did.”
She ignored his correction.
“You would have backed down.”
“So you lied to me?”
“I managed you.”
Richard sat heavily in my father’s chair.
“My God.”
Vivian looked at him with contempt.
“Oh, don’t pretend you’re shocked. You enjoyed everything Elena paid for.”
Richard looked up.
“I never asked her for anything.”
“You enjoyed the yacht.”
“It was a family weekend.”
“The Aspen house.”
“Elena invited us.”
“Exactly.”
Vivian pointed toward me.
“She had everything. And our son had nothing of his own.”
Adrian’s voice was low.
“I had a wife.”
She turned.
He continued.
“I had a daughter.”
For one moment, something human returned to his face.
Then he looked at me.
“I made a terrible mistake.”
I said nothing.
He stepped closer.
“Elena, I didn’t know about this.”
“You knew enough.”
“I didn’t know Mom was trying to move money.”
“You filed against me.”
“I thought it would force a negotiation.”
“You lied about my mental health.”
“Gregory wrote it.”
“You signed it.”
He stopped.
There are apologies that ask forgiveness.
And apologies that ask escape.
Adrian wanted escape.
I would not provide it.
Marcus’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Marcus Hale.”
His expression sharpened.
“When?”
He listened.
“Send it.”
He ended the call.
“What?”
“The bank received a video verification.”
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus’s phone buzzed.
He opened an attachment.
Then held it out to me.
A woman appeared on-screen.
Dark hair.
Red dress.
White coat.
For one impossible second, I thought I was looking at myself.
Then I saw the face.
Different.
Similar enough for a rushed verification.
She held a baby-sized blanket against her chest.
The recording was staged to resemble me.
A voice off camera said, “Please confirm authorization.”
The woman answered.
“I, Elena Grace Marlowe, authorize the beneficiary amendment naming my daughter Sophie Grace Cole.”
My hands shook.
Not from fear.
Rage.
Daniel replayed the clip.
“Deepfake?”
“No,” I said.
The woman blinked naturally.
Her mouth matched perfectly.
A real person.
An impersonator.
Marcus zoomed in.
A tattoo appeared near her wrist.
A tiny blue crescent.
Patricia made a sound.
I turned.
“You know her.”
She looked at Vivian.
Vivian finally looked frightened.
“Patricia.”
“Stop protecting her.”
“Patricia.”
The older woman faced me.
“The woman in that video is Vivian’s daughter.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
“What daughter?”
Vivian’s mouth opened.
No words came.
Patricia whispered the name.
“Adrian has a sister he has never met.”
And from somewhere behind us, a woman’s voice said softly—
“Yes, he does.”
We turned.
The woman from the video stood in the doorway.
Dark hair.
Blue crescent tattoo.
No red dress now.
She wore jeans and a white blouse.
She looked about forty.
Maybe younger.
And she looked enough like Adrian around the eyes that no one needed Patricia’s explanation.
Adrian stared at her.
“Who are you?”
She looked at Vivian.
“Ask Mom.”
Vivian sank into a chair.
Richard stood very slowly.
“Vivian?”
The woman gave a sad smile.
“Hello, Richard.”
He looked as though the floor had moved beneath him.
“You know me?”
“No. But I know you.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“What is your name?”
“Camille.”
“Camille what?”
“Marlowe.”
My blood went cold.
