A heavy silence followed. For once in her life, she had nothing left to say. Months later, Lily celebrated another birthday.
She didn’t want a massive party. She didn’t want a room full of people staring at her. So, we kept it intimate.
Just the family members who showed up because they genuinely loved her, a few close friends, and a homemade cake she picked out herself. No pressure. No expectations. When it was time to blow out the candles, Lily looked up at me.
“Are you sure?” she asked softly.
I smiled at her.
“I’m absolutely sure.”
She closed her eyes and made a wish. This time, nobody took the cake away. This time, nobody told her she wasn’t enough.
And as she laughed with her sister, it struck me that Daniel and Evelyn had never understood the real truth: losing control didn’t mean the end of our family. It was the moment our real family began.
