Then she leveled her gaze at Meredith.
“You spoke at great length this evening about status.”
Meredith clasped her hands together pleadingly. “It was a misunderstanding.”
“No. A misunderstanding is addressing someone by an incorrect title. What happened here was a calculated choice.”
Scarlett’s voice was barely above a whisper.
That quiet control rattled Christian far more than screaming ever could.
She turned her eyes to the directors.
“Were you aware that corporate funds were being allocated to sponsor private events organized under Miss Vale’s personal supervision?”
The board members exchanged hurried looks.
One answered cautiously, “Concerns had been raised regarding discretionary hospitality expenditures.”
Christian closed his eyes.
Scarlett caught the gesture.
“Concerns?”
No one dared answer.
The ballroom was so quiet that the faint hum of the central air system sounded deafening.
Scarlett turned back to Meredith. “You treated a stranger with total contempt simply because you believed she lacked the power to defend herself. That reveals far more about your character than how you would have behaved had you recognized my name.”
Tears welled in Meredith’s eyes.
“This was supposed to be my evening.”
Scarlett regarded her without malice and without mercy.
“That appears to be the root of the problem.”
Meredith’s composure broke down entirely.
She turned to Christian, frantic. “Tell her this isn’t happening. Tell her she cannot just walk in here and ruin everything over a silly practical joke.”
Christian glared at her.
“A joke?”
His voice cracked with outrage.
“You laid hands on the one individual who can call our entire debt facility due before Monday morning.”
Meredith flinched.
Christian’s fury finally boiled over.
“A single signature from her will cost this conglomerate more capital than your family has touched across three generations.”
Scarlett shifted her gaze to him.
“And yet,” she noted, “you allowed someone trading on your surname to believe this room belonged to her.”
Christian froze.
That rebuke cut far deeper than any financial threat.
Scarlett stepped back from the table. “This matter does not begin and end with Meredith.”
Christian bowed his head again. “I understand.”
“No. I don’t believe you do.”
She swept her eyes across the grand ballroom.
At the banquet staff who had been terrified to speak up.
At the executives who had stood by and watched in silence.
At the wealthy guests who had found the humiliation amusing right up until they learned her identity.
“What took place tonight required more than one arrogant woman. It required an entire room of people who believed cruelty was entirely permissible, provided the victim appeared socially powerless.”
Not a single guest could hold her gaze.
Scarlett addressed the board directors.
“The Foran Holding Group is immediately suspending all ongoing supply chain integrations with Vance Global, and freezing our discretionary credit line pending an exhaustive executive review.”
A director let out a sharp, audible gasp.
Another snapped his folder shut.
Christian remained silent.
Scarlett continued, “All proxy voting permissions currently exercised by the Vale Family Partnership are revoked under the standard bad-faith liability covenants already written into the contracts.”
Meredith stared in horror.
“No.”
The word was barely a whimper.
Scarlett looked directly at Christian.
“You will have the corner office on the seventy-fifth floor vacated by midnight.”
Christian’s head snapped up.
Meredith gasped.
Scarlett’s voice remained calm and even. “A forensic accounting team will begin auditing the operating accounts, foundation disbursements, executive hospitality budgets, and personal discretionary expenditures tomorrow morning at eight o’clock sharp.”
Christian swallowed hard.
“Yes, Chairwoman.”
Meredith lunged forward, grabbing his arm.
“You can’t just agree to this!”
Christian pried her fingers off him, one by one.
She looked at him as if he had struck her across the face.
“Christian?”
He looked down at the smear of white frosting across Scarlett’s gown.
Then at the silent board members watching his every move.
Then back to Meredith.
His expression hardened from fury into bone-deep exhaustion.
“How many times did you charge your personal expenses to corporate accounts?”
Meredith winced. “What?”
“The designer gowns. The private flights. The dinners. Your vanity charity committees. This entire gala.”
She shook her head frantically. “Those were authorized.”
“By whom?”
She said nothing.
Christian’s jaw clenched.
Scarlett watched the realization dawn on him.
This was the second collapse of the night.
The first was Meredith discovering Scarlett’s identity.
The second was Christian realizing that Scarlett’s arrival had exposed a rot festering inside his company that he had willfully ignored.
Desperation took hold of Meredith.
“You’re choosing her over me?”
Christian replied in a low, dead tone, “You made that choice the moment you decided everyone beneath you was disposable.”
Meredith’s eyes flared.
In one final, pathetic spasm of vanity, she attempted to reclaim the upper hand.
She pointed an accusatory finger at Scarlett. “She came here dressed like that on purpose! She wanted someone to make a mistake!”
Scarlett’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“I dressed for a business dinner.”
Meredith choked on her words.
Scarlett stepped toward her.
“You keep obsessing over clothing because wealth and appearances are the only vocabulary of power you understand.”
Meredith began to tremble.
Scarlett dropped her voice to a lethal, quiet register.
“True authority does not vanish when the diamonds are taken off.”
Nobody dared breathe.
Christian turned to the executive security team.
“Escort Miss Vale off the property.”
Meredith’s head whipped toward him. “Christian!”
He looked away.
“Have her personal belongings packed from the residence and delivered to whatever forwarding address she provides.”
Her face contorted in disbelief.
“You are throwing me out?”
“I am barring you from company property.”
She stared at him, mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks.
Then she looked back toward Scarlett.
“Please.”
It was the first sincere word she had uttered all night.
Scarlett held her gaze without blinking.
Meredith tried to take another step forward, but two security guards smoothly stepped between them—not touching her, but forming an impenetrable wall.
Meredith’s voice broke completely. “I made a mistake.”
Scarlett gave a slow, deliberate shake of her head.
