Staring at his mother as though seeing a complete stranger.
“What?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
Béatrice felt tears welling in her eyes.
“Your father was not the man you always believed him to be.”
Those words upended the entire room.
Even Inès looked caught off guard,
Because while she knew the secret existed,
She did not know the full story.
Alexandre stepped back slowly.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me this?”
Béatrice lowered her gaze.
“Because I was terrified of causing you pain.”
“So you took it upon yourself to decide what I was strong enough to handle?”
The accusation cut deep,
Yet Béatrice accepted it.
She knew he had to voice his pain.
“Yes. I made a mistake.”
She drew a ragged breath.
“I spent so long trying to protect you that I forgot you had grown up.”
Inès watched the exchange closely.
She believed she had finally located the fatal flaw;
She was convinced this revelation would shatter Béatrice entirely.
She stepped forward.
“Do you see now, Alexandre? Even your own mother hid the truth from you.”
This time, however…
The dynamic shifted.
Alexandre did not look at Inès;
He looked squarely at Béatrice,
And one undeniable truth struck him:
His mother may have harbored a painful secret,
Yet she had never once wavered in protecting him.
Thomas then stepped back into the fray.
“Madame Delorme never concealed this information for personal gain.”
He drew out a final document.
“She kept silent because she gave your father her solemn word to protect you.”
Alexandre took the parchment.
His eyes scanned the opening lines,
And his expression hardened.
“This can’t be…”
Béatrice whispered,
“What is it?”
Alexandre slowly raised his head.
“My father knew.”
Silence.
“He knew everything.”
On the page lay an old letter penned decades ago,
An unsent letter
In which his father explained precisely why he had begged Béatrice to remain silent.
Yet the concluding line of that letter held a disclosure that caught everyone completely unprepared,
A revelation that would irrevocably alter Alexandre’s understanding of the situation:
His father had not merely asked Béatrice to shield their son;
He had explicitly warned her to beware of one specific bloodline—
A bloodline represented today by the woman in the white wedding gown
Standing right in the center of the hall.
Alexandre raised his gaze toward Inès.
For the first time…
He did not see his fiancée;
He saw an existential threat.
Yet before he could utter a word,
The double doors of the château burst open.
An elderly man entered the hall.
Every head turned.
Béatrice went completely pale,
Because she recognized him,
And because she had believed him dead for over twenty years.
The man looked directly at Béatrice,
Then spoke words that froze the entire assembly:
“Béatrice… it is time you finally told your son the absolute truth about his father.”
To be continued…
Chapter 4 — A Mother’s Quiet Retribution
For several seconds, not a single person inside the grand hall of Château de Saint-Clair managed to utter a sound.
The man who had just entered lingered near the main entrance under the dim glow of the chandeliers, which were slowly flickering back to life.
His face bore the deep lines of time.
His hair had turned completely white.
Yet his gaze remained unmistakable:
A look Béatrice had never forgotten,
A look belonging to an era she had spent over twenty years trying to bury where no one could ever reach it—
Not even her own son.
“Antoine…”
The name escaped her lips in a hushed whisper.
Alexandre looked at his mother in utter confusion.
“You know this man?”
Béatrice remained silent.
She had no idea how to respond,
Because this man represented a piece of her past locked away in a vault of grief.
The man walked slowly down the hall.
The guests watched the scene unfold with mounting fascination.
Only moments ago, they believed they were attending a high-society wedding;
Now, they were witnessing the unspooling of a family saga steeped in long-hidden secrets.
Antoine Morel came to a halt directly before Béatrice.
“I am sorry for arriving like this.”
His voice was even.
“Yet I had no other choice.”
Béatrice tightened her lips.
“You should have stayed away from us.”
Antoine cast his eyes down.
“I know.”
An excruciating silence settled over them.
Alexandre looked back and forth between his mother and this stranger.
He felt as though his entire life had suddenly been built upon shifting sand.
Inès, who had been studying the confrontation, quickly regained her footing.
She sensed that this sudden arrival presented an opening,
A fresh angle to flip the narrative back in her favor.
She stepped forward smoothly.
“Fascinating…”
Her smirk returned.
“It seems Madame Delorme isn’t quite the flawless martyr she pretends to be.”
Several guests glanced toward Béatrice,
Yet this time, she did not look down.
She turned squarely toward Inès.
“You spent the entire evening waiting for someone to expose a weakness in me.”
She paused.
“Yet you forgot one crucial principle.”
Inès arched an eyebrow.
“And what is that?”
Béatrice answered with absolute composure,
“A truth is only lethal when it stays hidden.”
Antoine turned to face Alexandre,
His eyes heavy with remorse.
“I am your biological father.”
The confession landed like a seismic shock across the room.
Even those who had overheard fragments of the argument were left stunned.
Alexandre stood rigid.
He stared at this man,
This stranger claiming to be the foundation of his very identity.
“My father died when I was a child.”
Antoine nodded slowly.
“The man who raised you was an extraordinary human being.”
He looked at Béatrice.
“Yet he knew the whole truth.”
Alexandre clenched his fists.
“Then why did nobody tell me?”
The demand was no longer aimed solely at his mother;
It was hurled at everyone in the room.
Béatrice finally found her voice,
Though it sounded more fragile than before.
“Because back then, you were eight years old.”
