Every drop of color drained from Carmen’s face. The attorney beside her snapped his briefcase shut, took two steps back, and immediately withdrew from the case.
“They say revenge is a dish best served cold…” Julian declared, staring into her eyes with disgust. “And for a soul as rotten as yours, there is no better seasoning than this.”
Julian reached down and hoisted a heavy zinc bucket the workers had left by the trench—filled to the brim with stagnant water, fertilizer runoff, and thick, black sludge.
Before Carmen could even flinch, Julian hurled the entire contents forward in one smooth, ruthless swing.
SPLASH!
A massive wave of foul sludge crashed over her, covering her head and face, and obliterating her pristine ivory dress. Mud dripped from her eyelashes and ran down her cheeks, leaving her soaked, half-blind, and coughing up filth in front of the entire household staff.
Julian tossed the empty pail onto the stone path with a hollow clatter and muttered dryly:
“Oops.”
Part IV: The Reckoning of Karma
At that very moment, two police cruisers tore down the side drive, sirens wailing. A family court prosecutor and two patrol officers stepped out brandishing an emergency arrest warrant for aggravated domestic violence, financial fraud, and attempted extortion.
Scrambling to flee, Carmen lost her footing on the slick turf and fell directly onto her knees in a pool of mud. The officers pinned her hands behind her back and snapped steel handcuffs onto her wrists, smearing their own uniforms with the filthy residue of her greed. The woman who, hours earlier, had threatened to burn everything down was led into the back of a cruiser through tears of humiliating defeat.
Up on the second-floor balcony, Mateo, with fresh, clean bandages wrapped around his arms, smiled as the police lights vanished past the estate’s main gates.
Julian walked up the stairs, gathered his boy into his arms, and held him gently. Peace had returned to the Montelimar estate. Mud on fine clothes can easily wash away with water; the stain left behind by cruelty toward an innocent child, however, remains etched forever onto the soul of the one who inflicted it.
