For years, I had believed love meant giving up small things so everyone else could stay comfortable. Standing in that empty house, I finally understood how much that belief had cost me.
With David’s help, I began exploring a completely different future for the property. I contacted an organization that helped parents and children who needed temporary housing, and we started making plans to turn the house into a place where families could feel safe.
When I explained the idea to Leo, I kept it simple.
“I want the house to become somewhere families can stay warm.”
He thought about that seriously.
“Will they have pancakes?”
I smiled.
“We can make sure they have a kitchen.”
Then, a few days later, I found something in the pocket of the coat Leo had worn on Thanksgiving.
It was the paper turkey he had made at preschool.
On one wing, in uneven letters, he had written GRANDMA. On the other, GRANDPA. He had drawn himself smiling between them.
That was when I suddenly remembered why he had been so excited to finish dinner.
I called David.
“Do you still have the second envelope?”
“Yes.”
“Bring it over.”
Inside were documents I had asked him to prepare in October.
They were meant to give Richard and Patricia the house.
I had planned to announce it after Thanksgiving dinner, with Leo handing them his paper turkey while I explained that after four years of secretly keeping the property afloat, I was finally giving it back to them.
David watched me study the unsigned papers.
“You can keep the draft.”
I placed Leo’s turkey on top of them.
“I’ll keep this.”
Months later, the house welcomed its first family through the housing program. Leo came with me carrying a box of crayons, touched the same oak door that had once closed behind us, and walked inside without hesitation.
“Can they stay?”
“Yes.”
“They can stay.”
As we drove away that evening, I thought about how close my parents had come to owning that house again. I had arrived at Thanksgiving ready to give them everything.
All they had needed to do was let my little boy finish his cranberry juice.
