Outside, the silence stretched for an agonizing minute.
Then, I heard Liam’s muffled sniffling, followed by Emily’s sharp, frantic voice ordering him back into the car.
Daniel muttered something low and broken that I couldn’t decipher.
Footsteps retreated down the wooden steps and crunching across the gravel.
Car doors slammed shut, one after another.
The engine turned over, revved, and the tires crunched heavily as the vehicle backed out into the street and sped away.
I walked over to the bay window and watched the car disappear around the corner.
My house was utterly silent again.
The sun was climbing higher, casting warm, golden rectangles of light across the hardwood floors.
My cheek no longer stung.
I walked into the kitchen, picked up the phone, and called the local youth shelter to arrange the pickup of a brand-new red mountain bike.
Then, I sat down at my table, breathed in the sweet, clean air of my own independence, and drank my tea in peace.
