I sold the stage where my family displayed pride publicly while practicing contempt privately.
I sold the idea that being necessary meant being loved.
And with what remained, I bought quiet.
I bought locked doors.
I bought a round table.
I bought mornings when my phone can ring without tightening my stomach.
I bought a home where every room belongs first to the person who lives there.
Today, my house has fewer bedrooms.
Less furniture.
Fewer people coming and going.
But every room feels larger because I’m finally allowed to exist within my own life.
“My name is Camille Hail. I once owned a vast home filled with people who needed things from me. Today I live in a quieter house where people knock before entering. And I finally learned that peace does not require six bedrooms”
