Elena did not turn around.
She kept her hand on Maria Isabel’s arm, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of her mother’s blood through the heavy silk. Every step away from the flagstone terrace was painful, but with every breath of sea air, the knot in her ribs loosened a fraction of an inch.
Inside her, the baby kicked again—a sharp, clear, unmistakable demand for life.
Maria Isabel guided her into the leather interior of the SUV, her touch light, almost reverent, as if handling something infinitely precious that had survived a wreck.
“Where are we going?” Elena asked, leaning her head against the cool tinted glass as the door shut, cutting off the wail of sirens and Mateo’s desperate, high-pitched screams.
Maria Isabel took the seat beside her, resting her hands on her knees, her eyes fixed on the road ahead through the shattered gates.
“Home,” Maria Isabel said softly. “The real one. Where no one raises a voice, and no one ever touches what is ours.”
As the heavy tires turned onto the asphalt road down the cliffside, Elena closed her eyes, her hands resting safe and still over the beating heart of her child.
