The perfectly constructed trap had just violently snapped shut. But they weren’t the ones standing safely on the outside.
I clutched my crying son to my chest, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. I looked at Chloe, the floral-scrub-wearing nurse who had just single-handedly dismantled three years of my living hell.
Mark slowly turned his head to look at me. The charming facade was completely gone. The handsome coach was dead.
Staring back at me was the real Mark. Cornered. Vicious. And absolutely desperate.
And as he took a step toward my bed, ignoring the security guards, I realized this fight wasn’t over yet.
CHAPTER 4
Mark didn’t care about the security guards. He didn’t care about the psychiatric evaluator standing frozen in the corner. He didn’t even care about his mother, who was currently hyperventilating near the infant warmer.
All he saw was me, and the fact that his absolute control over my life had just been violently shattered.
He lunged across the narrow space between the foot of the bed and my pillows.
“You stupid bitch!” Mark roared, his hands reaching out, his fingers curled into claws aiming directly for my throat.
I screamed, instinctively curling my body over my newborn son, shielding his fragile head with my arms. I squeezed my eyes tight, bracing for the impact of Mark’s fists. I knew how hard he could hit. I knew what it felt like when his knuckles connected with bone.
But the blow never came.
Before Mark could even graze the fabric of my hospital gown, a massive force hit him from the side.
The larger of the two security guards—a broad-shouldered man with a thick gray mustache—tackled Mark around the waist. The momentum sent them both crashing hard into the metal medical cart. Stainless steel trays, gauze pads, and plastic instruments went flying across the room, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor.
“Get off me!” Mark thrashed wildly, throwing a blind elbow backward that caught the guard in the shoulder.
“Sir, you are going to stop resisting right now, or I am going to deploy my taser!” the second guard yelled, pulling a bright yellow device from his duty belt and aiming it directly at Mark’s chest.
Mark froze. He was panting heavily, his face flushed dark red, his chest heaving. He looked at the taser, then up at the two guards who easily outweighed him by a hundred pounds combined. The fight instantly drained out of him. The tough guy, the terrifying abuser who loved to beat on his hundred-and-twenty-pound wife behind closed doors, completely crumbled when faced with actual, matched physical force.
The first guard shoved Mark face-first against the pale green wall of the delivery room, aggressively pulling his arms behind his back.
“Zip-tie him,” the guard ordered his partner.
A sharp zip echoed through the room as heavy-duty plastic restraints were yanked tight around Mark’s wrists.
“This is a misunderstanding!” Eleanor suddenly shrieked. Her perfectly coiffed hair was falling into her eyes. The dignified church lady persona had completely evaporated, leaving behind a frantic, cornered rat. “My son didn’t do anything! That nurse is lying! She planted that recording! We are the victims here! My daughter-in-law is psychotic!”
“Ma’am, step back and keep your hands where I can see them,” the guard with the taser warned, pointing a stern finger at Eleanor.
“I am a respectable woman!” Eleanor yelled, taking a step toward the door. “I am leaving. I am calling my lawyer.”
“Nobody is leaving,” a booming voice echoed from the hallway.
A tall, older man with a distinguished face and a white lab coat stepped into the doorway. His badge identified him as Dr. Aris Thorne, Chief of Medicine. Flanking him were three uniformed police officers from the local precinct.
Chloe had not been bluffing. She had called in the cavalry.
Dr. Thorne surveyed the wreckage of the room. He looked at Mark pinned to the wall, at the shattered medical cart, at Eleanor shaking with rage, and finally, at me, crying and clutching my baby to my chest.
His gaze snapped to Dr. Miller, who was currently trying to shrink into the shadows near the sink.
“David,” Dr. Thorne said, his voice dangerously low. “Care to explain why you abandoned a surgical unit to initiate an unauthorized psychiatric hold on a maternity patient?”
Dr. Miller opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He swallowed hard. “Aris, I… Eleanor is an old friend. She called me, terribly concerned about the mother’s mental state. I was simply doing a preliminary evaluation.”
“With legal consent forms for custody transfer tucked into an epidural packet?” Chloe interjected loudly from the side of my bed. She held up the digital recorder. “I have the audio right here, Dr. Thorne. They explicitly discussed committing her to steal the infant.”
Dr. Thorne’s expression turned to absolute stone.
“Officers,” Dr. Thorne said, turning to the police. “I believe you have a situation here. And Dr. Miller, you are suspended pending an immediate hospital board investigation. Hand over your badge and wait in my office. If you try to leave the premises, I will have you arrested for medical malpractice and fraud.”
Dr. Miller looked like he was going to be sick. He numbly unclipped his ID badge, dropped it into Dr. Thorne’s hand, and walked out into the hallway, his career completely over.
The police officers moved into the room.
Two of them grabbed Mark by the arms, pulling him away from the wall.
“Mark Davis, you are under arrest for domestic assault,” the officer said firmly.
“Sarah, please!” Mark yelled, looking back at me as they dragged him toward the door. The fake charm was back, entirely desperate now. “Babe, tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake! I love you! I’m sorry, okay? I’m so sorry! I’ll change! Just tell them to let me go!”
