And perhaps that was exactly what Richard wanted.
Because his greatest gift had never been the house.
It had never been the money.
It had never been the inheritance.
His greatest gift was giving me the courage to finally stop believing that I was unwanted.
I spent my childhood being passed from one home to another.
I spent my adulthood afraid that happiness would disappear.
And then, when I least expected it, a lonely old man opened his heart to me.
He didn’t save me with his fortune.
He saved me by making me believe I deserved to be loved.
And now, every year on the anniversary of his death, Emily and I visit his grave.
She always leaves a small chess piece beside his flowers.
Because she says Richard was the one who taught her that even when the game looks hopeless, you should never stop looking for your next move.
And every time I see that little chess piece resting against his gravestone, I remember the words from his final letter:
You were never unwanted.
