Maren helped me write down what I remembered. Dad had told me to take loans for college. When Noah was born, Mom said they couldn’t afford to help me take time off work. I gave Maren the dates, then told her about the call from Mom the night before and her request to return the envelope.
“Keep any messages you receive,” Maren said. “And let me handle requests for the financial records.”
After she left, I tried to sleep while Evelyn watched Noah. Instead, I found myself looking at the photograph from the envelope. My grandmother’s note on the back still troubled me. Tell Claire the truth when she’s old enough. It might have referred to the trust, but I wished I could ask her.
Whitney called that afternoon. I let it ring twice before answering.
“Daniel won’t speak to me,” she said. “Mom says you showed him private family documents.”
“Daniel brought the envelope to the hospital. I showed it to an attorney.”
Whitney gave a sharp sigh. “This is why Mom didn’t want you to see it. You’ve decided we stole from you before anyone’s checked the facts.”
“I’m checking the facts now.” I looked at the notice. “Why did you sign for mail addressed to me?”
She was quiet long enough that I wondered whether the call had dropped.
“Mom asked me to take it when it arrived,” she said finally. “I assumed she would give it to you.”
“She didn’t.”
“I know that now.”
I asked when she had learned what was in it. Whitney said she hadn’t read the notice, but she knew our grandparents had left money for both of us. That hurt in a different way. She had never mentioned it while I struggled to repay my loans.
“I thought you knew,” she said.
“If you thought that, why did you tell Daniel I lived out of state?”
Whitney didn’t answer. Then I heard Daniel speak somewhere near her, asking for his coat. She told me she had to go and ended the call.
An hour later, Maren sent me a message. She had obtained one more document from the trust administrator: a form submitted shortly after Whitney accepted my notice. It requested a payment from my share and carried a signature that was supposed to be mine.
I enlarged the image on my phone. Whoever had signed it had copied the letters of my name carefully. But I knew I had never seen that form before.
