“Seven days ago,” I said. “After I smashed a window and screamed for help, once I realized neither of you had any intention of helping me.”
Ethan took a step forward, then froze abruptly, apparently recalling the explicit terms of the restraining order. “Rachel, please, let me explain…”
“There is nothing to explain,” I said. “You locked me inside our home while I was in active labor just so you wouldn’t miss a vacation that I paid for entirely on my own. I don’t believe any explanation could ever account for that kind of betrayal.”
“This is my house, too,” Ethan said, though his voice lacked the conviction his claim required.
“Actually, it isn’t,” I replied. “I bought this property on my own before we were married. For the past three years, you have lived here strictly as my guest.”
Patricia’s fragile composure finally broke, giving way to pure desperation. “Where are we supposed to go?”
“That’s a question you should have asked yourselves before locking a woman in labor inside her own home,” I said. “I imagine your generous vacation budget can cover a temporary fix.”
