“Good,” Emma said, smiling through the remaining tiredness in her eyes.
“Because you’re going to help us pick out new locks for every single door in that house.”
When they arrived back home, the front porch was quiet and still.
Nora opened the door with Lily cradled securely against her chest, fast asleep against a soft flannel blanket.
Daniel stepped inside, took his boots off at the entrance, and locked the deadbolt behind him with a solid, definitive click.
He walked over to the crib where Emma had laid Lily back down on the fresh cotton sheets.
The silver key to Unit 14 still sat on the dresser, but beside it now lay a new set of house keys and the clean, unopened mail.
Emma leaned against Daniel’s side, resting her chin on his arm as they watched the gentle, rhythmic rise and fall of their daughter’s chest.
Daniel didn’t look over his shoulder, and he didn’t listen for footsteps in the hallway.
He simply reached down, wrapped his fingers around Emma’s hand, and held it tight in the quiet light of the room.
