“You hid them from a standard IRS audit, Ethan,” Christian said with a terrifying, razor-sharp grin. “You didn’t hide them from a top-tier corporate intelligence firm retained by the family that practically wrote the book on corporate surveillance in the Southeast. Every server ping, every encrypted WhatsApp text, every offshore wire was intercepted and archived four months ago. My brother Julian knew about your little extracurricular romance before you even took Miss Pierce to your first overpriced steak dinner in Uptown.”
Ethan stared at Julian in paralyzed horror. “You… you knew? You knew the entire time and said nothing?”
“I was waiting to see how deep the rot went,” Julian said coldly, adjusting his cuffs. “I gave you enough rope to hang yourself, Ethan. And what a magnificent knot you tied.”
Lauren broke down in panicked tears, completely losing her professional composure. She whipped around to Ethan, her voice shrill with hysterics. “You said they wouldn’t find out! You said your family was just a bunch of wealthy country bumpkins!”
Ethan flinched—not from Lauren’s betrayal, but from the crushing realization of what he had truly thrown away. He crawled on his hands and knees across the wrecked dining room floor toward Grace, reaching out a trembling hand to grasp the hem of her skirt.
“Grace… Gracie, please,” Ethan sobbed, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “Look at me. Please. We’re having a baby. We’re a family. You love me. You know you love me! Don’t let your brothers do this to me. I’ll fire Lauren tomorrow! I’ll sign fifty percent of the company over to you! Just… please tell them to stop!”
Grace looked down at him.
There was no anger left in her eyes. That was the most terrifying part. There was only a profound, bottomless pity—the look reserved for a rabid stray animal too far gone to save.
“Five years ago, Ethan, I sold my grandmother’s necklace to make your payroll because I believed in the man you pretended to be,” Grace said, her tone utterly detached. “Tonight, you brought your mistress into our home, mocked me, and struck me across the face while I carried your child.”
She took a step back, slipping out of his reach.
“The man I loved died a long time ago, Ethan. You’re just a stranger wearing his clothes.”
Julian gave Marcus a single nod.
Without a word, Marcus seized Ethan by the collar of his ruined shirt, hoisted him effortlessly to his feet, and marched him toward the front door like a rag doll. Christian grabbed Lauren by the arm, hauling her up despite her frantic shrieks and dragging her behind them.
“Where… where are you taking us?!” Ethan screamed, thrashing wildly as Marcus shoved him through the front entrance.
“Not to county jail, Ethan,” Julian said smoothly, walking past them into the cool night air as he buttoned his overcoat. “County jail is far too comfortable for you. You’re headed to a federal holding facility in Virginia, where federal prosecutors are reviewing your wire fraud indictments. Bail has been set at ten million dollars—which is ironic, considering that five minutes ago, every bank account, asset, and credit line associated with Walker Development was frozen under an injunction by Vance Holdings.”
Julian paused by the door of his armored SUV, looking down at Ethan one last time.
“You wanted to play with the big boys, Ethan. Congratulations. You’re broke, you’re indicted, and you’re going to spend the next twenty years thinking about what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you.”
The heavy SUV doors slammed shut.
Within thirty seconds, the convoy swept down the driveway, leaving the Myers Park estate in dead silence once again.
Grace stood in the center of the ruined foyer, surrounded by broken glass and spilled wine.
Julian, Marcus, and Christian walked back inside, their expressions softening the moment they looked at their little sister. Julian stepped forward, opening his arms wide.
Grace stepped straight into her eldest brother’s embrace, burying her face into his shoulder and letting out a long, trembling breath as the weight of the last five years finally lifted from her shoulders.
“Are you alright, Gracie?” Marcus asked gently, resting a heavy hand on her shoulder.
“I’m better than alright,” Grace whispered, pulling back slightly and looking at her three brothers with a radiant, genuine smile that hadn’t touched her face in years. “I’m free.”
Julian smiled, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head. “Good. Now pack your things. You’re coming home with us.”
The morning sun over the Blue Ridge Mountains bathed the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance family estate in Asheville with a brilliant golden warmth, entirely distinct from the muggy, suffocating heat of Charlotte.
Three days had passed since the night of the anniversary dinner.
Back in Charlotte, the corporate collapse of Walker Development had been swift, brutal, and total. By Wednesday morning, financial outlets across the Southeast were blaring the news of Ethan Walker’s sudden, catastrophic indictment on multiple counts of federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion. The board had ousted him within hours; primary investors pulled out en masse; and the luxurious Myers Park mansion had already been seized by federal marshals on behalf of creditors tied to Vance Holdings.
Lauren Pierce had been arrested at her Dilworth townhouse early Tuesday morning, her designer luggage packed for a flight to the Cayman Islands that was never going to leave the tarmac.
And Grace?
Grace was sitting in a plush velvet armchair on the stone terrace of her family’s mountain estate, wrapped in a thick cashmere throw, holding a steaming mug of spiced apple cider in her hands.
The air smelled of fresh pine, damp earth, and clean mountain wind.
Soft footsteps sounded on the stone patio behind her.
Julian walked out carrying a leather folio under his arm and two mugs of fresh coffee. He handed one to Grace before sitting down in the adjacent iron chair, looking out over the endless rolling expanse of green that stretched toward the horizon.
