Eventually, Chloe pulled a faded receipt from one of the folders and exclaimed, “You both need to see this.”
Samantha accepted the delicate document and studied it carefully, visibly surprised by what she discovered.
The receipt was dated twenty-six years earlier, well before my relationship with Gavin and long before my parents’ deaths.
Across the top, the printed company name read: THORNTON AND MONTGOMERY RESTORATION SERVICES.
I examined the document as Samantha indicated two separate signatures near the bottom.
One signature was unmistakably Madeline Thornton’s.
The other belonged to Patricia Thornton.
My thoughts raced. “So Patricia knew Aunt Madeline all those years ago?”
Samantha nodded as the unexpected connection became clearer. “It appears their relationship was considerably closer than we realized.”
She reached farther into the folder and discovered an old color photograph tucked behind the original receipt.
Four cheerful young women stood together outside a beautifully renovated Victorian residence.
I recognized Aunt Madeline, her younger sister Rose, Patricia Thornton, and one additional woman whose identity was immediately obvious despite the passing years.
It was Brenda.
She looked decades younger, but I could recognize her face without hesitation.
Someone had written a short message in elegant handwriting on the photograph’s reverse: Our first restoration project together. Back then, we genuinely believed we could change the world.
For a moment, I felt disoriented, as though two family histories I had always considered separate were suddenly becoming parts of one story.
“How could Brenda have known my aunt for decades without ever mentioning their connection to me?” I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady.
Samantha could offer no immediate explanation.
Just then, my phone vibrated against the conference table as a message arrived from a number I didn’t recognize.
I opened the message and read: “Hello, Claire. My name is Patricia Thornton. I believe the time has finally come for someone to explain how your Aunt Madeline became connected to our family long before Gavin entered your life.”
Another message arrived almost immediately: “There’s also something important Madeline entrusted to me, with instructions to return it to you if you ever decided that leaving the Maple Avenue residence was necessary.”
I read the final words twice before speaking. “What could she possibly have been keeping for me?”
Samantha lowered her gaze toward the old photograph showing four women standing together on the porch.
“I believe,” she said softly, “we may finally be approaching the truth about why Madeline was so determined to safeguard that property.”
