MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW CHANGED THE CODE TO MY VILLA IN NICE… BUT SHE DIDN’T KNOW THE SECRET MY HUSBAND LEFT BEHIND BEFORE HIS DEATH
PART 1 — THE CODE THAT WASN’T THEIRS Chloe’s face went pale.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Even the warm breeze coming from the bay seemed to have stopped.
I was still holding the court order between my fingers. The paper was trembling slightly, not out of fear, but from the anger I had been holding back for far too long.
Nicolas looked back and forth between his wife and me.
“Mom… what is this eviction story all about?”
I turned my eyes slowly toward my son.
“That is precisely the question you should have asked your wife before locking me out of my own home.”
Chloe suddenly snapped out of it.
“You’re lying!”
She stepped toward me.
“This house has become our family residence. Nicolas lives here. I live here. We paid for renovations, bought furniture…”
I held up the court order.
“And none of that gives you the right to change the locks, modify the security system, and bar me from a property that I solely own.”
Chloe opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
Nicolas frowned.
“Chloe… you told me Mom gave us the villa.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
I looked at my son.
“I never gave you this villa.”
He blanched.
“But… you told me I could live here.”
“I said you could stay here with your wife for a while. Because you had just lost your job, and I wanted to help you out.”
I paused.
“I never said I was giving up my rights.”
Chloe crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous. She’s just trying to throw us out because she doesn’t accept our marriage.”
I let out a humorless laugh.
“Our marriage? Chloe, I welcomed you into this home like my own daughter.”
I pointed to the boxes in the hallway.
“You took down my paintings.”
Then I pointed to my kimono, which she was still wearing.
“You took my belongings.”
Finally, I touched my cheek, which was still sore.
“And you hit me.”
Nicolas looked down.
For the first time since his arrival, he seemed to understand the gravity of the situation.
“Chloe…”
“Don’t start!” she yelled.
At that moment, the sound of engines could be heard down the avenue.
Chloe froze.
Two vehicles were slowly driving up the private road.
Behind them was a gendarmerie vehicle.
Then a second one.
I took a deep breath.
Everything had finally reached the point I had prepared for.
Three days earlier, I had discovered that Chloe had the access code changed without my permission.
But that was only the tip of the iceberg.
For several weeks, my attorney, Maître Delmas, had been working on a much bigger case.
Because Chloe hadn’t just tried to block my access to my home.
She had begun acting as if she owned it.
She had contacted the property management company.
She had given instructions to the maintenance staff.
She had even attempted to alter certain administrative documents regarding the villa.
And above all…
She had found an old copy of a power of attorney I had signed years ago to allow Nicolas to handle certain expenses during my absence.
A limited power of attorney.
Very limited.
Yet Chloe had discovered that she could try to use it.
I had only realized her plan when my bank called me.
A transfer request had been submitted.
A substantial amount.
Several hundred thousand euros.
The request had been blocked.
However, that day, I realized my daughter-in-law was no longer just taking advantage of my hospitality.
She was trying to take control of my life.
The first officer stepped out of the vehicle.
Chloe took a step back.
“Nicolas…”
He turned toward her.
“What did you do?”
She shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“Why does Mom have an eviction order against us?”
Chloe remained silent.
I walked over to my son.
“Nicolas, I didn’t want things to turn out like this.”
He looked at me, his eyes glistening.
“Why didn’t you tell me anything?”
“Because I wanted to give you a chance to see it for yourself.”
An officer approached.
“Mrs. Martine Laurent?”
“Yes.”
“We have been instructed to assist you in enforcing the court order.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
Then I looked at my son.
“Nicolas, you can stay.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“You’re my son. I’m not going to throw you out like a stranger.”
Chloe erupted.
“Are you kidding me!”
She turned toward Nicolas.
“Are you really going to let her do this?”
Nicolas didn’t answer.
“Nicolas!”
He closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Chloe… you should have told me the truth.”
All color drained from her face.
“What truth?”
He opened his eyes.
“Did you really try to transfer my mother’s money?”
The silence was instant.
I saw something shift in my son’s eyes.
He had finally understood.
Chloe hadn’t just crossed a line.
She had crossed every line.
PART 2 — THE FILE HIDDEN IN THE SAFE The gendarmes entered the villa.
Chloe stood motionless near the door.
She had lost all of her confidence.
A few minutes earlier, she had been carrying herself like the queen of the place.
Now, she seemed to be searching for an exit.
“I’m going to pack my things,” she said.
The officer replied calmly:
“You may retrieve your personal belongings under the conditions outlined in the order. However, you must not interfere with the procedure.”
She gritted her teeth.
“It’s my house too.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
One word.
Nothing more.
Yet for the first time, Chloe had no comeback.
I went upstairs.
Every step reminded me of something.
Here, I had hosted Nicolas’s birthday.
In this bedroom, my husband and I had planned his first trip.
In this room, I had kept our family photographs for years.
And now, everything felt unfamiliar.
When I opened the door to my study, I stopped.
